Empire State Games
"Each year, more than 30,000 men and women, young and old, tryout in the spring for a chance to represent their region as a finalist at the Summer Games in scholastic, open or masters divisions. And in each of the sports competition is keen. Through the years, many Games' alumni have moved on to national, international and Olympic competition. They include world champions, Olympic gold medalists, college and high school All-Americans, professional athletes in the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL - as well as figure skaters, skiers, soccer players, and many more. But for every pro athlete or Olympian there are a thousand athletes for whom the Empire State Games may be the pinnacle of their athletic career. And that is what makes these Games so special." Kudos to all our SSC senior swimmers who tried out for the Empire State games in an extremely competitive contest to earn a spot on the Long Island team. Two of those swimmers highlighted below advanced to the finals last month in Buffalo.
Congratulations to Marielle Pavek, a triple bronze medal winner at Empire State Games ! Mari, who only just completed her freshman year of High School, took 3rd in the 100 meter free and 50 meter free individual events, and anchored the 400 free relay Long Island team for another 3rd place finish. Marielle also posted a personal best in the 50 Free prelim, with a blazing time of 28.21, tying for first place in the prelims and inching closer to national standards. This time also earned Marielle a place in Metro Top Ten 15-18 year age division for the long course season.
Congratulations also to James Donlevy! James, like Marielle, represented Long Island in the 17 & under Scholastic Division at Empires, competing against top swimmers from all regions of NYS. James, who just turned 15, posted personal bests in all 3 of his events, breaking a minute for the first time in the 100 meter free, with an amazing 59.65 secs and a 10th place finish. James also posted a personal best of 25.99 going into the 50-m free prelim, finishing 8th in an extremely competitive finals heat, and shaved seconds off his 100-fly with an 11th place finish. Both James and Marielle have the potential to compete on a national level during their high school years.
Highlights from Junior Olympics
Representing our 10 & Unders were Vinny Budke, Tim Cheng, Joseph Weinhofer, Jocelyn Fisher, and Jessica Freund. Tim Cheng, debuting in his first JO meet, dropped 2.66 secs off his 100 back. Versatile young veterans Vinny, Joseph and Jessica each competed in at least 8 events, and all dropped time. Young Vinny dropped almost 1.5 secs in his 50 fly and shaved tenths off his 100 fly. Jazzed Jess dropped time in 7 of her 9 events, most notably dropping more than 6 secs in her 200 IM and over 4 secs in 50 back and 200 free. Jessica also took a 16th place ribbon in the 100 breast. Way to go! Steadfast Joseph also dropped time in 4 of his 9 events, most notably almost 4 secs from his 200 IM, and over 4 secs off his 400 free, just missing a 16th place ribbon by heart-stopping hundredths. It was Jocelyn with the biggest drop, however - a huge 8 secs from her 100 breast, in addition to continuing to shave time off her 50 breast. Good job to all !
Kianna Papele and Marisa Tutone excelled among the 11-12 yr olds with Kianna continuing to showcase her amazing potential in the 50 free, and Marisa, a contender to watch, competed in the 100 free, 100 back, 200 free and 200 IM, dropping almost 2 secs from her 200 free and 100 back events.
In the 13-14 yr olds, competitors Cameron Byrne in the 100 free and 100 breast and Christopher Tutone, who continued to drop time in the 50 free, just keep getting stronger!
Marielle Pavek again excelled for our 15-18 year olds, incredibly dropping time in 5 of her 7 events. Marielle, just coming off of her medal-winning performance at Empires, placed 1st in the 50 free, 4th in 100 free, and 15th in 200 free.
Congratulations to all our swimmers for a great Long Course season ! See you in a few weeks !!
